Looking back it is surprising how often our lives entwined over the years, from earliest work days playing together in an awful works football team (double digits were not uncommon!), to playing in the same quiz league team (Alan was soooo competitive but also so bright that we were always confident of a win), badminton partners at Laxfield (he played on well after I had given it up, again…competitive but he could hold his own against anyone), season ticket holders at Ipswich (even though he was an ardent Hull City fan – we drove up there when Hull were at home to Ipswich and I didn’t realise just how far away that was!), his help with refereeing when I ran a football team (yes, he was a qualified referee) and of course when he re-married (I don’t believe I have ever seen a man so happy as he was that day). We hadn’t spent so much time together in recent years but will nevertheless be sadly mourned by me. He was always about for a chat at lunch, in the corridors, anywhere really and was quite simply a good man whom it was my pleasure to call a friend.
